Aroma Espresso Bar Keeps It Fresh, Launches Freshly Baked Bread Bowls [APRIL FOOL’S]

Much-kneaded edible bowl concept increases portions, decreases waste

The sight and scent of fresh bread straight from the oven is a sensory experience aroma espresso bar customers will enjoy a lot more. Today aroma announces plans to extend its lineup of loaves to include freshly baked bread bowls as edible vessels for their hearty and nutritious salads and soups.

“Our new freshly baked bread bowls are the best thing since sliced bread and we have already heard from customers who are saying it’s the toast of the town,” says Anat Davidzon, Managing Partner at aroma espresso bar. “This transition to bread bowls increases portion size for our customers, decreases waste and overhead at our cafés and strengthens our standing in the community as a place where neighbours come to break bread.”

Beginning this summer, aroma will convert its operations to support the use of freshly baked bread bowls for all salads and soups, as well as its Shakshuka, Moroccan-Spiced Chicken and Grain Bowl and Atlantic Salmon and Roasted Carrot Couscous Bowl.

Made using the same bread aroma espresso bar already produces in-house for its handcrafted sandwiches, the freshly baked bread bowls are baked fresh throughout each day in each café and available in white, whole wheat or multigrain. A gluten-free option is expected later this year.

“We explored a lot of stale half-baked ideas and strongly believe we’re on a roll with this concept,” says Neil Creighton, Director, Food and Beverage at aroma espresso bar. “We’re already looking forward to further extending our breadily-available edible lineup to include freshly baked bread mugs and to-go cups by the end of 2019.”

To promote the new freshly baked bread bowls, aroma will attempt to set a world record by ceremoniously shattering over 2000 of its current ceramic bowls at once during this year’s Taste of The Danforth festival.

Signs You May Need A Hot Drink

Signs You May Need A Hot Drink:

  • You can see your breath while reading this.
  • Your teeth chatter more than your co-workers.
  • You try to scroll down but can’t because you’re wearing gloves.
  • You look longingly at snowmen and envy their cold-weather comfort.

And the number one sign you may need a hot drink? It’s winter. (Is it ever!)

Here are three hot drinks you’ll only find at your neighbourhood aroma espresso bar:

Hot Chocolate

Our classic Hot Chocolate is just like homemade. Chunks of premium milk chocolate are melted under steamed milk for a rich and authentic flavour. Spoil yourself and add a marshmallow or two. And be sure to stir!

Pistachio Latte

Pumpkins are passé – pistachios are where it’s at! Our signature espresso is flavoured with pistachio, topped with freshly whipped cream prepared in-house every day and drizzled with a rich pistachio crema. We finish each drink with a sprinkle of hand-grated pistachios for a little crunch.

Aroma Coffee

We melt chunks of premium milk chocolate in our signature espresso and top it with cocoa and freshly whipped cream prepared in-house every day. One sip and you’ll understand why it’s our signature drink!

“There’s so much more to Canada’s rich culinary heritage than just maple so we decided to keep it fresh and focus on another authentic Canadian treat – the Nanaimo bar,” says Neil Creighton, Director of Food and Beverage at aroma espresso bar. “It’s cold, creamy and chocolatey, everything a summer drink should be and it couldn’t be more Canadian if were made by a moose and served by beavers named Bob and Doug.”

The Ice Nanaimo features a whole 2 x 3 in. Nanaimo bar blended with ground almonds, milk and chocolate for a delectable drink dotted with rich chunks of the quintessentially Canadian confection. The Ice Nanaimo retails for $5.65.

Hit Refresh on Healthy Eating With Our New Spring Menu

Encouraging You to Eat Different with New and Trending Ingredients Harissa, Spirulina

aroma espresso bar is spicing up your spring with a savoury new sandwich and injecting a shot of nutrition into your favourite cold drink! The new Harissa Tuna Sandwich and an option to add Spirulina to select drinks will be available beginning Tuesday, April 18 at all locations (except kosher), for a limited time.

“We’ve been experimenting with incorporating harissa and found it’s the perfect complement to this Tunisian-inspired dish” says Neil Creighton, Director of Food and Beverage at aroma espresso bar Canada. “It’s a natural fit with our menu offering and as the ingredient continues to grow in popularity, we’re excited for our customers to be exposed to it as part of the Harissa Tuna Sandwich.”

A staple of North African cuisine, harissa is a traditional hot chili spread closely associated with Tunisia and the surrounding region. The Harissa Tuna Sandwich at aroma features a hearty spread of spicy harissa with the perfect balance of heat and a robust flavour featuring four different peppers, tomato, lemon and a subtly smoky finish. The sandwich is stuffed with flaky albacore tuna, hard-boiled egg, tomato, red onion and pickle. For the first time in the brand’s 10-year history, a sandwich will be served on something other than aroma’s signature freshly baked breads. The Harissa Tuna Sandwich arrives on a hearth-baked artisan soft sesame and semolina bun, served with Kalamata olives on the side.  It will retail for $6.95 and has 480 calories.

Health-conscious customers looking for a nutritional boost will find it in new Spirulina shots, available to add to an Ice Lemon Mint or any Real Fruit Smoothie or fruit juice. Each 10-gram shot is made by freezing fresh spirulina (a blue-green algae) and water. The resulting shot is rich in natural nutrients, vitamins and minerals and especially high in iron, with a higher nutritional content in contrast to dried and/or powdered spirulina. It will retail for $1.95 with fewer than 5 calories per shot.

“Spirulina is rich in antioxidants, natural vitamins and minerals – an excellent nutritious value-add to your drink,” says Creighton. “It will definitely turn your drink green though, so be prepared for a few funny looks.”

Also featured on the spring menu at aroma espresso bar: the Warm Grilled Chicken Salad, refreshed to add roasted garlic eggplant and roasted red pepper, remains $8.65 with a minor bump to 270 calories, and the Ice Lemon Mint, an aroma signature slush made with fresh mint and ice blended with lemonade retailing for $4.25 (medium) with 110 calories.

TL;DR aroma espresso bar introduces Harissa Tuna Sandwich + Spirulina Shots:

  • New sandwich features spicy and smoky harissa, served on a sesame and semolina bun
  • Add a shot of nutrient-rich spirulina to your favourite cold drink
  • Roasted garlic eggplant, roasted red peppers added to our Warm Grilled Chicken Salad

aroma espresso bar Set To Open Farm-to-Table Café aroma espresso Barn

Fully-functioning farm, 19th century barn transformed into hip, healthy hangout

**UPDATE: You all know this was an April Fool’s joke right?**

E-I-E-I-espress-O! aroma espresso bar Canada has bought the farm – literally! Celebrating its 10th year of operation in Canada, the brand is excited to announce its newest dining concept: aroma espresso Barn. Set to open on a rural property two hours west of Toronto near the banks of Lake Ontario, The Barn features over 100 items currently available at all aroma locations made using only fresh ingredients cultivated on the two-acre property.

“We’re creating a really unique experience and often joke eating at The Barn will be like ‘The 100-Metre Diet’,” says Roald MacDonald, General Manager at aroma espresso Barn. “Our kitchen staff can reach out the window to pick a fresh tomato off the vine or visit the chicken coop for a fresh egg; even the milk in your coffee will come from our very own cows… that smell also comes from our cows. Sorry.”

The property features a fully-functioning farm with a 120-year old farmhouse painstakingly restored and transformed into the aroma espresso Barn, a 2,200 sq. ft. café with soaring ceilings, ample tractor parking and space for 65 people to dine on the ground floor, including stables converted to dining booths and hay-bale bench seating.

The Barn’s second level promises to be a neighborhood hub, functioning as a yoga studio, art gallery, acoustic concert venue and league axe-throwing space. The patio features a covered outdoor espresso bar constructed completely of salvaged wood from the surrounding properties and seats an additional 45 people downwind from the cow pasture. Sorry.

TL;DR aroma espresso bar opens The Barn:

  • Restored 19th-century farmhouse converted to hip and healthy hangout
  • Over 100 items available freshly made to order and sourced from farm-to-table
  • Opening this summer!

Meet A Franchisee: Alasdair from Ottawa

Did you know one of our franchisees is a chartered accountant? Or that another used to be a school principal? Did you know we have a franchisee who has climbed Argentina’s Mount Aconcagua?!

With nearly 40 aroma espresso bar locations across Toronto and Southern Ontario to date, our franchisees are a hard-working and interesting group of diverse women and men, each with a different background and their own story to tell.

Welcome to the first installment of our new #aromaBlog series, Meet A Franchisee. Through these posts, we hope to bring you closer with the owners and operators you see each day when you visit your neighbourhood aroma espresso bar.

Name: Alasdair Grant
Store: The Shops at Lansdowne, Ottawa

Photo Apr 17, 11 07 49 AM

In February 2016, Alasdair opened the first aroma espresso bar in Ottawa to great excitement. Since then, he has regularly supported numerous local charities including Ottawa’s United Way and the Boobyball and is a constant fixture at events taking place in Lansdowne Park. In March 2016, he was featured in the Ottawa Citizen where he shared our recipe for Freekeh Salad.

Think back to the first time you ever visited an aroma espresso bar. Where was it and what was your first impression?

It was at 430 King Street West (at Spadina). I think it had just opened. I knew aroma had good food but I was blown away. Ottawa has restaurants with good food, and there are places where you can get good coffee; but not both.

What interested you in opening your own aroma espresso bar?

I always dreamed of running a restaurant or café but never considered it a possibility. One day a friend messaged me and said he knew aroma was looking to expand into Ottawa and wanted someone local be the franchisee. I jumped at the opportunity.

What do you enjoy most about owning and/or operating your aroma espresso bar?

The food. The coffee. The fact my family and I can eat this food every day and be healthier for it. I discovered long ago that you succeed in the business of selling or serving something when you yourself consume and enjoy the product you stand behind.

Your café is in Ottawa.  What do you like most about being there?

Ottawa is a very big small town. Or a very small big city. There is a sense of community here. The neighbourhoods have a lot of character and goodwill, people talk to each other. And fortunately this has worked in my favour. I have had a great number of people who became instant fans and helped spread the word on social media and even through old-fashioned word-of-mouth. I never imagined such a warm welcome.

Describe a memorable moment at aroma espresso bar.

At my aroma?  Having our soft launch in February 2016 on the day of a record-breaking snowfall in Ottawa.  It snowed over 51cm that evening, shattering the previous record set in 1947. Naturally, most people invited didn’t make it out that night. But considering how many still trudged out, I consider it a testament to this city’s passion for aroma.

Photo Feb 16, 5 03 57 PM

What advice would you offer someone considering opening an aroma espresso bar?

Like coffee. It sounds silly but if you don’t like coffee it will be hard to be passionate about what you do at aroma. If you want to run your own business and you aren’t passionate about it, you probably won’t be giving your 100%. Also, giving that 100% is hard to do when you are really tired. The biggest perk of owning a café is having access to lots of really good coffee!

Tell us something about yourself you’ve never told anyone until now.

I regret not buying more Pogs.

OK. For real.

I once did a big tour (walkabout if you will) of the USA on Greyhound buses. I spent several hundred hours on these buses, saw some strange parts of the states and met even stranger people. It is not a comfortable, pleasant or even economical way to travel, but it was an adventure, and memories I will always have.

Hot Drinks For People Who Don’t Hibernate

It can be challenging to find something to bring us joy during winter. Just getting dressed to go outside involves a pep talk, strategic layering and much clenching of teeth.

This time of year, all we really want is to curl up under a blanket in front of a fireplace with a hot drink and a good friend. Call us when spring blooms!

For those who don’t have the luxury of hibernating, we want to share a few good reasons to warm up at your neighbourhood aroma espresso bar:

Cold Pressed Ginger Turmeric

Naturally sweetened with lemon, honey and a pinch of cinnamon, this elixir will warm you up from the inside when served hot. The combination of ginger and turmeric packs a powerful and healthy punch. Full of antioxidants, it promotes digestion and pain relief, and is considered to be anti-inflammatory and effective treatment for common colds and flus.

Hot Apple Cider

A throwback to a classic cold-weather drink! Our cider is made from locally-grown Ontario apples and served with a dried apple and cinnamon stick for stirring. Great for all ages and an unsung hero of our hot drinks selection.

Hot Chocolate

You won’t find any chocolate syrup, chocolate powder or chocolate mix in our classic Hot Chocolate. Instead we only use real chunks of premium milk or white chocolate melted under steamed milk. Be sure to stir for a rich, chocolatey flavour, or be like those-in-the-know and let it sit for a creamy, gooey melted chocolate delight at the bottom of your cup.

Chicken Broth

Cold? Flu? Fight back with a cup of steaming hot chicken broth, served with fresh chives. Warm up your soul sipping on this savoury soup – or is it a drink? Should you sip it, or slurp it? A few things to think about while you wipe your mouth and hide the cup from your grandmother.

The ultimate hot weather-cold weather drink! A scoop of vanilla ice cream drowning in a hot shot of freshly pulled espresso is sure to satisfy your friends who are sweating in their scarves and those who love to chill (literally).

TL;DR Hot Drinks For People Who Don’t Hibernate:

  • Loads of interesting hot drinks at your neighbourhood aroma espresso bar you won’t find elsewhere.
  • Our Hot Chocolate is made with real chocolate – no syrups or powders here!
  • Caught a cold? Feeling flu-ish? Try our Chicken Broth, served to go with fresh chives.

Nourishing Young Minds [Guest Post]

We are happy to share this wonderful blog post from our good friend Libby Roach. A writer and photographer from Toronto, and mom to a couple of great kids, Libby has been published in BlogTO, View The Vibe, Post City Magazines, and many other local publications. She recently posted a blog on her website about our Aroma Kids’ menu, and our one-of-a-kind #aromaKidz contest, and has allowed us to share it with you here! Read on to learn why aroma espresso bar is Libby’s choice for nutritious options when it comes to casual family dining, and be sure to visit Libby’s website for more photos and information on #aromaKidz and our great contest!

by: Libby Roach

Now, I’m not one to play the mom card often, but when it comes to feeding young minds, it’s glaringly obvious that we have a problem when it comes to food education and children. Let me be a debbie downer for a mo- As a mom of two, I’m acutely aware that this generation’s life span likely won’t live as long as our current one. That’s a scary statistic. On the flip side of being a mom, I’m time compressed on the road- options for quick grab and go meals are hard to come by. Bucking the golden arches is easy enough, but how do you feed two sporty kids on the go between hockey/karate/swimming and hip hop dance classes (don’t even get me started on dabbing).

So when I found out Aroma was launching a kids menu, I was pretty stoked. I love Aroma- their coffee packs a punch and their food is fresh and healthy. I know when I walk in the door I’m going to make a pretty safe choice. And that goes for my girls too. Kids can snag either French Toast with Fresh Fruit, Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Cucumber Sticks, or Tri-colour Pasta with Red Pepper and Tomato sauce. Each portion is comes with fruits or veggies and is filling- not dumbed down- no chicken nuggets or mac n’ cheese in sight. You also score a drink (milk, juice, lemonade) and a fresh baked cookie. While tots are limited to three combos (for now I hope!) they’re all clear winners and shows that this restaurant on the right track when it comes to kids nutrition.

Because Aroma and I are tight, I am happy to promote this new menu, and I’m excited to add that they have a killer contest to kick things off! To celebrate the new menu, they’ve brought on an artist- digital finger painter Chelsea Lundy (@chelsdrawsyou) to recreate your fave photo of your crew!

The prize is an 8×10 framed drawing by Chelsea Lundy for Aroma Espresso Bar valued at $100.00 and there will be one prize winner per week, announced each Tuesday. So whatcha waiting for? You can enter the contest and see full details here.

Special thanks to Aroma for including me in this contest, and to Chelsea for her lovely portrait of my girls!

Let’s Talk About Free Smoothie Day

Hi everyone. Let’s talk about Free Smoothie Day.

We want to thank everyone who walked in the hot sun, came out to one of our stores, stood in line, and ordered a Free Smoothie.

We apologize to those of you whose local aroma espresso bar ran out of Smoothies or ran out of ice.

In 2007, we opened the first aroma espresso bar in Canada. Since then, we have been able to expand to 36 stores only because of our loyal customers. Your support is what drives us to ensure we continue to serve fresh, natural, and wholesome food and drinks.

When we launched our Keep It 100 campaign for our 100% Real Fruit Smoothies a few weeks ago, we wanted to do something big. We wanted to reflect our appreciation for our customers. We wanted to give something of value back as a Thank You for all you’ve given us.
We spent weeks planning this event. Stores stocked up on products and staff. We tried hard to put a refreshing Smoothie in everyone’s hands.

But we admit we were not prepared for how many of you love our Smoothies. As much as w prepared, we were overwhelmed with the demand. Many stores ran out of product early. Some had blenders malfunction and break. Others went through all the ice their ice machines could produce, having to then wait for it to refill.

With your feedback on Free Smoothie Day – both positive and negative – we are getting a clearer picture of where we need to improve the next time we have such a promotion.
So stay tuned this summer – We will take everything we learned from Free Smoothie Day and make it up to those of you who missed out.
Thank you.

Three new aromaBoosts were also added: Protein, Antioxidant, and Energy.

“Adding veggies is a great way to give your smoothie a nutrient dense boost,” says Aly Shoom, Certified Nutritionist. “Adding kale to your daily smoothie is an amazing way to increase the nutrient content of your diet with powerful antioxidants, and beets are a great detox food that helps purify the blood and liver.”

Smoothies at aroma are made using 100% real crushed fruit and vegetables, with no sugar added and no preservatives.

Keep It 100 with 100% Real Fruit Smoothies

“I keep it 100 like I’m running a fever.” – Drake, Views.

It starts and ends with 100% real crushed fruit, vegetables, and ice. No added sugar, no added sweetener, no added preservatives. That’s how we Keep It 100 with our 100% Real Fruit Smoothies.

It’s also how we Keep It 100 with our freshly prepared salads and sandwiches, handcrafted with wholesome gourmet ingredients and made to order. Once we realized how well our fresh vegetables complement the taste of our nutritious smoothies, it was a no-brainer to add our wildly popular Mango + Kale Smoothie.

“Adding veggies is a great way to give your smoothie a nutrient dense boost! Veggies can help balance blood sugar, which has several amazing benefits, like keeping you fuller longer, accelerating weight loss, and improving skin health,” says Aly Shoom, Certified Nutritionist.

We use 10 grams of the same organic kale in our Organic Kale and Portobello Salad and our Freekeh Salad, and add it to our 100% Real Fruit Smoothie for an extra helping of healthy.

“Kale is among the most nutrient dense foods on the planet! Adding kale to your daily smoothie is an amazing way to increase the nutrient content of your diet,” continues Ms. Shoom. “One serving of kale includes more than 200% of your RDA (recommended daily allowance) of Vitamin A & C and 3g of protein! Kale is also jam packed with powerful antioxidants making it great for total body vitality.”

Customers love our Mango + Kale Smoothie so much, we launched a new smoothie to keep you happy while still keeping it 100! Introducing our new Mixed Berry and Beet Smoothie, made with 65 grams of cooked beets and 100% real fruit.

“Beets are a nutrition powerhouse and a great addition to any smoothie,” says Ms. Shoom. “Not only do they taste great, beets are a great detox food that helps purify the blood and liver.”

Our 100% Real Fruit Smoothies are dairy-free (ed. note: obviously – they’re 100% real fruit!) and you always have the option of adding fat-free yogurt for a richer and creamier taste.

If you’re looking to keep it even more than 100, add a new aromaBoost, available in Protein, Antioxidant, or Energy.

When we say we Keep It 100, we mean it. We take fresh seriously, and you should too.

Enjoy a 100% Real Fruit Smoothie the next time you visit your friendly neighbourhood aroma espresso bar, and remember to Keep It 100 every day, no matter what you do!
